BIRDS ON BLOCKS
This ongoing project is inspired by life on a Texas coastline. The project emerged from the reuse of wood scraps from our home renovation and other fun art and garden projects. Seemingly wasteful to just throw out so much good wood just because of its small size, repurposing them into adorable chunky canvases for a different way of displaying artwork seemed like a better idea. With their “uselessness”, I released any real care about what I was going to be painting on them; and because they were different than my usual choice of large canvas, it was a great time to try something new that I’d been daydreaming about for a while!
I LOVE being outdoors and seeing all the different plants and animals. Living on the coast we get to see lots of different coastal birds like pelicans, herons, egrets, spoonbills, and so many more! I’ve studied and painted these coastal birds for at least a decade now. What carelessness they have in their day to day life compared to humans; just flying around and eating in the great outdoors looking so pretty. What if they had to get around like humans? Driving, working, entertaining themselves with activities and hobbies, possessing things, buying things.. What if a pink roseate spoonbill was driving that pretty cherry red Bel Air that I’ve been seeing? The thought made me laugh, so I decided to paint it just to see.
This series began with “Spoonbill in a Bel Air” in late winter of 2023 and is ongoing.
